Community ~ Needs

button1 The Office of Emerging Ministries of MCC is answering the call of our strategic growth initiative to grow into multi-cultural, international, spiritual communities by:
1) Providing diversity resources and consultation to churches that enable them to increase their capacity to reach and minister effectively to a diverse community, and
2) Recommending resources that will enable our churches to become faith communities that are not only more diverse but also more inclusive.

OEM recommends the following films as beginning points for discussions on inclusion within MCC for the 21st Century: Please visit the MCC catalog listing at and email Rev. Miller if you are interested in bringing any of these films to Open Door MCC for our congregation and the community.

button1 If you are so moved, you might donate additional monies to the “Do Unto Others” fund, which allows Open Door to help folks who need emergencies monies for necessities. Just mark your gift DUO or “Do Unto Others” in the memo line. Bless you!

button1 The Tasha's Cabaret event is scheduled for September 6, and Linda and Colette are looking for your talent for the show! Please speak to Linda today to have your act included to sing, make jokes, play an instrument, juggle, mime, do magic, or if you have any other talent to showcase.

square_button We need you! Please sign up for coffee hour to bring a snack, make coffee, and clean up afterward, it's fun and easy and helps us to share fellowship together after service.

As you prepare for travel and lounging this summer, and arrange for your mail to be held, for your cat to be fed, and for someone to come mow the lawn, don't forget to send your check to Open Door in the mail, or pop online and send your donation by PayPal. You are crucial to the ministry of this church, and we are as active as ever during summer months

square_button Open Door is making “Clean Kits” for distribution by Montgomery County Homeless Services. Ongoing donations of personal toiletries (toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, nail clippers, washcloths, or deodorant) are needed and welcome. Please speak to Corrine Bertram with interest or questions.

square_button Please prayerfully consider the gifts that we still need very much:

  • Will you join the sunday school team and teach one lesson to the youth each month during service? (Lessons are provided.)
  • Will you join the choir and add your voice to the chorus of song?
  • Will you become a member of the Sparkle team and help to insure that the church is cleaned thoroughly once each month?

If so, please speak to Rev. Miller or a Board Member today!

Open Door needs one or more volunteers to be involved with the planning for the Trans Day of Remembrance, which is commemorated on or around November 20 each year. It will involve monthly meetings and collaboration with other County faith communities.

Getting Involved at Open Door - There are dozens of ways to become more involved. Greeting, ushering, working with the youth in Sunday School, bringing groceries for the food pantry, join the Board of Trustees to maintain the building and property, celebrate communion, join the Sparkle team to keep the church shining, serve as a reader  or acolyte, sing with the choir, plan a visit to Shady Grove Nursing Home.

We are also planning a mowed labyrinth outside on our property. Adam DeBaugh has designs and directions for other mowed labyrinths and is forming a team to design and create one at Open Door.  Please contact him at or at 301/926-1205 or see him at church if you are interesting in being involved.

Or maybe you feel passionate and called to another work at Open Door. Speak to Rev. Miller about where you feel drawn to meet a need.

Like food? Like to help? How about joining our hospitality team. We are looking for help with coffee hour after service. If you would like to do once a quarter or every other month etc. we will work with you.

Donations of non-perishable foodstuffs and gift cards from local major grocery stores and gas stations are always needed and welcome. (Please provide the receipt in case the cards have not been activated.)

Donations of personal toiletries are always needed and welcome. Donate toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, nail clippers, washcloths, or deodorant for packets to be given to folks in need.  Please contact Corrine Bertram with interest or questions.
