look  Open Door is an active and vibrant congregation committed to the physical and spiritual well-being of our congregants and our communities. There are a hundred ways to become more involved. Greeting, ushering, working with the youth in Sunday School, and bringing groceries for the food pantry are a few.  You may want to join the Board of Trustees to maintain the building and property or celebrate communion, serve as a reader or acolyte, sing with the choir, or plan a visit to Shady Grove Nursing Home. Al-Anon: A confidential twelve-step fellowship of relatives and friends of alcoholics who share their experience,  strength, and hope in order to solve their common problems. Contact Paula W

Christmas in July: An annual fundraiser to remember the work of Christmas ("To find the lost, To heal the broken, To feed the hungry, To release the prisoner, To rebuild the nations, To bring peace among brothers, To make music in the heart." Howard Thurman). Contact Jim l

Congregational Care: Assists the pastor and helps meet the needs of church members and friends who are ill, incapacitated, or in the hospital. Through phone calls and visitation, provides comfort, offers prayer, and offers communion. Contact Curt J

Food Pantry: A yearlong ministry to provide nonperishable food items to individuals and families in need. The collection each first week of the month is donated to Western Upper Montgomery County HELP, based in Poolesville. Holiday baskets and grocery cards are distributed at Thanksgiving and Christmas each year.  Contact Michelle E

Green Team: Open Door is committed to creating a sustainable culture with our land and within our building. Reduce, reuse, recycle! Contact Colette B

Grounds Team: Mows our eight acres and tends to our gardens, including our Memorial Garden where individual ashes are laid to rest. Contact Norma K

Homeless Outreach: We collect personal items and toiletries year-round to assist individuals and families in need. Take packets with you to distribute during your week. Contact Corrine B

Hospitality: Provides coffee, food, or snacks for fellowship following services. Contact Curt J

Music Ministry: The Joyful Noises choir offers an anthem during Sunday services between Labor Day and Memorial Day and performs a holiday concert in December. Individuals may also offer solos, duets, or other small group vocal or instrumental pieces during services.  Contact Board of Directors

NAMI Support Group: A peer-led support group for family members, caregivers, and loved ones of individuals living with mental illness. Gain insight from the challenges and successes of others facing similar circumstances. Contact Art M

People of African Descent: A developing ministry to raise awareness of the issues, social and spiritual justice, and culture of African Americans in our congregation and communities. Opportunities to represent Open Door in local community efforts. Contact Board of Directors

Pride/Outreach Events: Open Door is a proud participant or co-organizer of community events raising LGBTQ visibility or working for social and spiritual justice, including District Pride, Frederick Pride, Germantown Oktoberfest, WUMCO Fall Festival, and Frederick in the Streets. Prayer Chain: Lend your prayers/energies toward healing for our local and global communities. Contact DeLaine M

Social Justice: Regular and occasional opportunities to actively participate in global and local social justice issues, discussions, and event planning. Contact Board of Directors

Sound Ministry: Provides sound and technical support for Sunday services, Tasha's Follies, the Valentine's Day Heartburn Dinner and Dance, and other events as needed. Contact Christine M

Sparkle Team: Cleans and neatens the building and sanctuary for use. Most often, 'behind the scenes'.

Stewardship: Open Door is a very generous and big-hearted community, evidenced by our quick response to church, individual, and family needs and crises. The stewardship team is building a year-round awareness and ongoing conversation that can develop and deepen this culture of generosity. Contact Richard S

Tai Chi: A dynamic meditative art to develop centeredness and calm, tai chi offers physical and spiritual benefits to the practitioner. Free classes every Thursday morning at 10:00 am. Once a month we attend a meditation practice and talk by Tara Brach of the Insight Meditation Community of Washington. Contact Boards of Directors.

Tasha's Follies: An annual variety show fundraiser to celebrate and showcase the talent of Open Door. Contact Colette B or Board of Directors

Tender Loving Care (TLC): Plans ways to show kindness to community members on their birthday, when they're sick or in the hospital, or when they've lost a loved one; plans social events like game nights; plans visits to local nursing homes. Contact Richard S

Trans and Gender-nonconforming: A developing ministry to raise awareness of trans issues, trans social and spiritual justice, and trans culture in our congregation and communities. Opportunities to represent Open Door in local community efforts. Contact Board of Directors

Usher/Greeter Team: Welcomes congregants with a smile and a bulletin before Sunday service. Collects the offering and guides participants during communion. Contact Christine M or Kate V

Website: Makes information about our community and ministries available online and on Facebook. Calendar events, sermon text and audio, and spiritual food updated regularly. Contact John H

   Worship Teams: Participates in Sunday service by reading scripture, serving or holding the elements during communion, anointing during communion, and lighting the altar candles. Contact Linda G
